The Five Senses
“The five senses” is a subject explored by a handful of Renaissance painters, among them Jan Brueghel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Michaelina Wautier. For my own version of the five senses, each sense is represented by an intelligent species in the world of Fantasy Ecology.

Cosimo, the Duke of Macchia’s prize boar-hunting mastiff, has run afoul of a porcupine den during a training exercise. The Duke’s head dog keeper, Antonio Castiglione, helps him out. Nearby, Antonio’s daughter plays with Cosimo’s newborn puppies. Their little bellies are softer than velvet right now, but, like their father before them, they are someday destined to become boar hunters themselves.
