The Five Senses
“The five senses” is a subject explored by a handful of Renaissance painters, among them Jan Brueghel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Michaelina Wautier. For my own version of the five senses, each sense is represented by an intelligent species in the world of Fantasy Ecology.

Hearing
In the warmer months, almost every member of an elven troop joins the hunting party. In winter, elves usually hunt alone. Young Easóg Dé Deichtine has spent the better part of the day tracking the stag, listening to its crunching footsteps as it treads through the snow. The stag is followed by robins, as its path unearths worms hidden beneath the snow. But their songs mask the faint sound of Easóg nocking a flint-tipped arrow and pulling back the bowstring...
