The Five Senses
“The five senses” is a subject explored by a handful of Renaissance painters, among them Jan Brueghel the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Michaelina Wautier. For my own version of the five senses, each sense is represented by an intelligent species in the world of Fantasy Ecology.

Sight
Eyeglasses are still rare on the Southern Continent, so fixing a pair is an unusual task for Jari Hlevangsdottir. Her workshop is deep beneath the earth, in the heart of a dwarf city. Her work is illuminated by her headlamp, fueled by a special mix of fats and oils from various animals. The mix produces a flame that burns bright, is relatively cool, and gives off little to no smoke. Which animals the fats come from, and what proportion of each ingredient is added, however, is another of the many secrets of the dwarfs.
